MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) – Some athletes competing in IRONMAN Madison aimed to qualify for the World Championship, while others simply hoped to cross the finish line.

Carly Schrom, a Wisconsin native, completed her first IRONMAN and secured first place for women. Carlos Echeverria, from Chile, traveled more than 5,000 miles to compete this weekend.

"I'm just at a loss for words. I'm just kind of blown away. I just am so grateful for what my body does for me," Schrom said.

Schrom planned to participate in her first IRONMAN in 2022 but was unable to compete due to health issues.

"I couldn't do this two years ago, and I just broke down in tears in the middle of the bike, just because it just feels so much emotion," Schrom said.
