It’s the dinner hour, and I am on my computer, calling people I don’t know. It’s the second night this week I’ve done this.

I could never work in a call center. I don’t even like to call my friends on the phone. I’d prefer to send an email, a text, or write a letter. I’d rather have bamboo slivers driven under my nails or be covered in honey and laid out in the desert for the ants than call strangers on the phone.

What if they’re at dinner? What if they just got the baby to sleep?

But I do the work, because, otherwise, the Republican-controlled State Board of Elections may disenfranchise nearly 100,000 North Carolinians. I do this work because it’s important, and because nobody should have their vote taken away through no fault of their own.
