KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Kalamazoo begins a $60 million water system overhaul Monday, a yearslong project that includes a new treatment plant and replacement of aging mains.
The Eastside Water Treatment and Water Main Project calls for a $50 million, 15,000-square-foot facility on Michigan Avenue to filter PFAS, iron and manganese from groundwater. Another $10 million will go toward new mains connecting two major pumping stations, streamlining how water is treated and distributed.
“Station 5 is rock solid, performs great. It’s a very reliable station. We use it every single day,” said City Engineer and Public Services Director James Baker, referring to the station built in 1914. “That being said, 111 years is a long time, and it’s time for us to think about the future.”
