AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Dove Creek Equine Rescue has been in the community for 13 years, working to reduce the unwanted horse population.

According to the organization, the unwanted horse population is a group of horses within the domestic equine population that are no longer needed or useful, or their owners are no longer interested in or capable of providing financial or physical care.

"There are so many abandoned, neglected, and abused horses, along with the side of you know, tragedies happen. Hard times happen to families, and for a facility like ours to be available for people to surrender their horses, or for the counties to be able to bring horses here rather than take them to a cell," added Ali McEwen, Director of Equine Operations and Volunteers.
