ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
As part of its annual Copper Theft Awareness Month, PNM is warning customers about the dangers and costs of copper theft — a growing problem across New Mexico.
The utility company reports 110 copper theft incidents at businesses in 2024 alone, resulting in power outages, expensive repairs and hazardous situations.
Copper, commonly used in electrical wiring, is highly sought after for its market value. Thieves target homes, businesses and utility sites, often leaving behind exposed and dangerous electrical equipment.
PNM stresses that tampered transformers — often found in green metal boxes — may continue to supply power but pose serious risks such as electrical arcing or sparks. These situations can be fatal if touched.
