JAMESTOWN, Texas — Smith County ESD 2 broke ground on Fire Station 76 Saturday morning in Jamestown.
The small community has had to rely on fire departments from neighboring communities to keep them safe. Residents say this resulted in longer response times.
"It's been a long eight years," Jamestown resident Lisa Hamman said. "Words can't describe it, let's put it that way."
Hamman has been advocating for a fire station in Jamestown since her house was struck by lighting in 1998.
"We had no clothes, we had to start over from scratch. It's very devastating," Hamman said.
Smith County ESD 2 Operations Chief Eric Greaser said northwestern Smith County has been tough to cover.
