A former chief of cardiology at Hurley Medical Center is suing the Flint hospital, alleging Hurley’s leadership terminated his contracts after he pushed them to address practices that put patients’ lives at risk.

One of Dr. Samir Elian’s patients died because the hospital had only a single working mobile cardiac monitor, Elian said in a complaint filed Thursday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

After Hurley decided not to renew a contract for emergency cardiothoracic surgery services, another patient died while waiting to be transferred to another hospital capable of treating his heart condition, the complaint alleges.

Further, the hospital’s lack of a cardiac quality assurance program likely places it in violation of federal rules, the complaint said.
