FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- It's that time of the year again, and hunters in Fairfax County are coming together to reduce and stabilize the deer population.

On Sept. 6, the Fairfax County Deer Management Archery Program began in parks and other locations throughout the county. Under the oversight of the police department and Fairfax County Park Authority, hunters in the program are allowed to take down deer.

The archery program began in Fiscal Year 2010 and is part of the integrated Deer Management Program to reduce and stabilize the white-tailed deer population in Fairfax County.

In 2000, the Board of Supervisors approved the program and recognized the program as a safe and efficient way to control the deer population.
