FREMONT, Mich. (WOOD) — Fremont Public Schools says its students can now participate in athletics for free.

The Board of Education and Superintendent Brad Reyburn decided to get rid of the pay-to-play system, hoping to increase participation and reduce some financial stress for local families, the district said.

"For many families, these fees have been a barrier to participation, preventing students from exploring their interests, building teamwork skills, and staying active,” said varsity soccer coach Steve Vissia in a statement. “By removing the financial burden, the district is sending a clear message: extracurricular activities like sports are not a luxury, they’re an essential part of a well-rounded education."
