MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — A Maryland man who turned himself in to police after a fatal 2024 shooting in Morgantown has been sentenced.
According to a press release from the Monongalia County Sheriff's Office, 20-year-old Arnold Johnson III of Montgomery Village, Maryland, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of 21-year-old Rashad Alton.
The shooting occurred on July 11, 2024 just before 1:45 a.m. on Mountain Valley Drive. Alton was found by deputies suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital where he later died.
"We're proud of dedication and work our detectives did to ensure a positive outcome on the senseless murder of Rashad Alton," the release said.
Johnson was initially thought to have fled West Virginia before turning himself in
