FOXBORO — The public grace period didn’t last a full hour of game time.

It took until deep in the fourth quarter, but the sound was unmistakable — a rumbling cascade of boos for Mike Vrabel and his team from the rain-soaked crowd at Gillette Stadium on Sept. 7.

His coaching debut with the Patriots went sour on a decision to punt with less than five minutes remaining and a two-score deficit staring him in the face. The Raiders spoiled whatever immediate good will Vrabel hoped to build with this 20-13 win over the Patriots, one that looked hauntingly familiar to anyone who’s watched this franchise stumble its way through life without Tom Brady at quarterback.
