A New Jersey mayor has left the Democratic Party and endorsed Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli for governor ahead of the November election.

Everett E. Garnto Jr., the mayor of Garfield, a city with a population of just over 30,000, said he felt that he had no choice but to switch parties because "the state is broken," adding later that "Jack Ciattarelli is ready to turn this state around."

Garnto made the announcement at an event last week in front of at least 200 people, according to the state outlet New Jersey Globe .

Newsweek has contacted Garnto, Ciattarelli and his Democratic governor hopeful Representative Mikie Sherrill, via email, for comment.
