Seniors are key targets for online and phone scams, with the FBI recording 147,127 scam reports and nearly $5 billion in stolen funds from Americans age 60 and over in 2024.
However, the likelihood of being defrauded out of your money as a senior may depend on where you live. According to a new report from Caring.com, Arizona had the highest proportion of fraud victims over 60 with 88.3 fraud complaints per 100,000 people age 60 and over in 2024.
Why It Matters
In 2024, older adults reported more than 147,000 instances of fraud. That was eight times more than people under 20 years old (17,993) and 1.3 times more than the second most frequently defrauded age group, 40- to 49-year-olds.
Still, the level of scam attempts varies significantly by state.
