The numbers

The Australian sharemarket declined for second day on Tuesday, with banks and energy stocks widening their losses from Monday.

The S&P/ASX 200 closed down 56 points, or 0.6 per cent, at 8793.60, with nine of the 11 industry sectors ending the session in the red. The losses came after the ASX fell 0.3 per cent on Monday. The Australian dollar was stronger at US66.08¢.
