Niagara-on-the-Lake has restored four boundary stones in the first phase of an innovative project that began four years ago.

Sumra Zia, the town’s heritage planner, said at the Sept. 3 heritage committee meeting there were plans to restore five of the stones, but because of time restrictions and other obstacles, including the difficulty of digging out the stones, only four were restored.

“We are starting to plan for the next phase,” said Zia.

The restoration work that began in late August included excavating the boundary stones by hand, temporarily removing the stones and cleaning them, and then replacing the ordnance stone in a stabilized hole on top of a foundation bed surrounded by a layer of stones and installing a protective fence encircling the ordnance.
