PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- A Downtown Peoria icon is temporarily closing his shoe-shining shop.

But never fear, George Manias, who runs George’s Shoeshine and Hatters World Headquarters, will be back. This isn't a permanent thing, he said on social media.

In a Sept. 5 Facebook post, Manias told customers he is waiting for medical clearance before reopening.

“I will not be able to open until I get a release date from my doctor, hopefully in early October. I would like to return sooner, but my legs aren’t cooperating,” he wrote.

The longtime business has been a staple in the community, serving customers with shoe repair, shines and classic hat sales.
