WEST FARGO — With school back in session and fall sports in full swing, local athletic trainers say they are already dealing with a lot of injuries and offering best practices to keep kids in the game.

Athletic trainers at West Fargo Sheyenne High School said the most common injuries right now, including ankle sprains and tendinitis, are from overuse.

While summer sports leagues help athletes stay in shape and get recognized by college recruiters, they can also make them more prone to injury, trainers said.

They said to prevent injuries during the season, children need to stay hydrated, eat a high-protein and complex carbohydrate diet, and get at least eight hours of sleep each night.

"I always tell the kids, 'Nobody cares more about you than you. So you need to take care of yourself.
