FARGO — After fouling a pitch off the foot, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks trainers checked to see if first baseman Jose Sermo was good to continue his ninth inning at-bat.

For Sermo, leaving the game never crossed his mind and he delivered in crunch time.

Sermo returned to the box and knocked a line-drive single to left field to walk off the Sioux Falls Canaries 2-1 in the first game of the American Association West Division Championship Series Monday at Newman Outdoor Field.

“I was definitely going to battle through it,” Sermo said. “Endure the pain and just try to help the team as much as I can.”

The RedHawks lead 1-0 in the best-of-5 series. Game 2 is slated for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Newman Outdoor Field.
