Households are being advised to pour bleach and boiling water down all their drains to prevent a pest invasion this month.

Specialists have cautioned that British properties could experience an unwelcome surge in silverfish as temperatures drop and moisture levels rise.

Despite their misleading name, silverfish are minuscule creatures measuring between 12mm-19mm in length.

They feast on sugar and starch found in domestic items including books, photos, paperwork and wallpaper.

Whilst they don't bite people, their presence can spark allergic reactions, particularly in those sensitive to mites and similar insects, research from German specialists reveals, reports the Express .
