Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56 in Port Colborne is hoping to bring a visual reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans to the city’s downtown.

Late last month, representatives from the legion paid a visit to city councillors and staff to pitch the idea of veteran crosswalks — three at crossings in the area of Clarence and Catharine streets and another at Sugarloaf and Elm streets near H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park, where the city’s Remembrance Day ceremonies are held.

Branch 56 president Harry Hamilton said in an interview it has about $6,000 to contribute to the project and it would be ideal to get one in place ahead of Remembrance Day, but also before the local legion branch’s 100-year anniversary in 2026.
