Belleville city council on Monday parked, for the time being, a new study proposing a 50 per cent hike in hourly parking rates in the downtown.
The parking study was set for council approval to usher in modernization of the city parking regimen, including upping current $1-an-hour parking fees to $1.50, but it was paused at the request of Coun. Garnet Thompson.

The report also recommends increasing the monthly fee for daytime permit parking from $65 to $75.
Thompson, chair of the city Transportation Committee, informed council the study caught Downtown Business Improvement Area officials off guard and he suggested any recommendations be tabled until DBIA members can meet with the city’s Transportation Committee to discuss their concerns.
