WASHINGTON – A House committee released a slew of documents about disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, including a “birthday book” with messages purported to be from President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz, among others.
Democrats on the committee had released the Trump note that he and the White House have denied the president wrote or signed. Another page in the full book the House Oversight and Reform Committee released features a picture of Epstein with another man and a woman whose face is blacked out holding an oversized check for $22,500 signed "DJTRUMP."
“Jeffrey showing early talents with money + women sells ‘fully depreciated’ [name redacted] to Donald Trump for $22,500,” the page states.
The book is filled with lewd pictures, with many faces blacked out, and messages both handwritten and typed from well-wishers for Epstein’s 50th birthday. The book lists notable figures such as Clinton and Dershowitz as contributors and "friends," but neither has been charged in association with Epstein.
Clinton's apparent handwritten note mentioned Epstein's "childlike curiosity" and "drive to make a difference."
Dershowitz's apparent typed note said he obtained an early version of "Vanity Unfair" and "talked them into changing the focus from you to Bill Clinton," with a mockup of the fake magazine cover. Fake articles included "Al-Qaeda in South America financed by Epstein?" and "Jeffrey Epstein's Bloody Summer."
Democrats focused on Trump's purported contribution and demanded to know what other references to the president might be in the Epstein files.
“Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret,” said the message with Trump’s signature.
But Trump has denied contributing to the book and sued the Wall Street Journal, which first wrote about the book, for $10 billion. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Sept. 8 in a social media post that Trump didn't draw the picture or sign it, and said the litigation will continue.
The committee chairman, Rep. James Comer, R-Kentucky, subpoenaed the book and other records from the late Epstein's estate as part of an official review of his criminal investigation. Comer accused Democrats of “cherry-picking” documents such as the Trump note.
Other documents Republicans released including Epstein's will and a 99-page list of names and phone numbers. Comer said the committee could pursue additional Epstein bank records.
“Oversight Committee Republicans are focused on running a thorough investigation to bring transparency and accountability for survivors of Epstein’s heinous crimes and the American people,” Comer said in a statement. “President Trump is not accused of any wrongdoing and Democrats are ignoring the new information the Committee received today.”
Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His aide, Ghilaine Maxwell, who compiled the birthday book, is serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in the conspiracy.
Lawmakers in both parties have called for the release of all documents from the criminal investigation because of Epstein's relationships with rich and powerful people. But the Justice Department reported in a July 7 memo that a "systematic review" of documents "revealed no incriminating 'client list.'"
The memo stated that "further disclosure" of records would not "be appropriate or warranted," the memo said.
