Supermarkets including Tesco and Aldi could soon make big change to Sunday hours
Ministers are reportedly considering proposals that could permit supermarkets to remain open for extended hours on Sundays as part of a potential overhaul of trading regulations.
Current legislation restricts large retailers exceeding 280 square metres in England to just six consecutive hours of trading between 10am and 6pm on Sundays, with mandatory closures on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.
Smaller establishments under 280 square metres face no such limitations and may operate at any time on Sundays.
According to The Grocer, Treasury officials have informally raised the possibility of relaxing Sunday trading restrictions, as Labour confronts criticism over forthcoming business rates changes sched
