BURLINGTON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - Burlington City Councilors on Monday evening voted unanimously to accept a $2.2 million state grant that will go towards efforts to open Vermont's first center for controlled drug use in a safe environment.

The grant follows state legislation to authorize grants for overdose prevention centers, or OPCs. The bill was vetoed by Governor Phil Scott, who called it a "costly experiment," but the legislature overrode his veto.

City officials say the center will have multiple benefits for the city, "in turn reducing public drug use and syringe litter, and most important [saving] lives."
