PHOENIX (AZFamily) — An officer-involved shooting that killed a suspect has closed a major west Phoenix intersection on Monday afternoon.

Police are asking everyone to avoid the area near 35th Avenue between Van Buren Street and Buckeye Road , as it will remain shut down as detectives investigate the incident.

Police initially responded to reports of an armed robbery in the area. The caller told officers that a man had pointed a gun at him and stolen his cellphone. The victim told officers what car the suspect drove off in. Officers then tracked the suspect’s car down, and the driver came to a stop in a vacant field.

Officers on scene called for back up, but then allegedly saw the man point a handgun at them. That’s when the officer-involved shooting happened.
