DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - The Duluth City Council passed a resolution late Monday night recognizing the Duluth-Superior LGBTQ+ community and proposing the creation of a new committee to oversee the initiative.
The measure passed 7-2 after lengthy debate, despite ongoing concerns about the city’s over $7 million budget deficit and the possibility of a looming tax levy increase. Those financial issues were tabled.
Councilor Arik Forsman said Duluth has an opportunity to set an example.
“We don’t have an active commission that can hear it, and that gets at the center of the problem, and that means we do need to move to a different model under that committee structure,” said Forsman.
