SAN DIEGO – The Reds missed a golden opportunity on Monday night.

The Reds fell to the Padres, 4-3 , in 10 innings at Petco Park and wasted a glorious start by left-hander Nick Lodolo . The Mets were blanked, 1-0, by the Phillies, which meant the Reds could have gained a game in the National League Wild Card race.

Instead, the Mets maintain a four-game lead over the Reds.

Lodolo exited after five brilliant scoreless innings in which the Padres managed but two hits and one walk. Just one baserunner reached scoring position against Lodolo, who returned after skipping a turn with an illness.

The Reds supported Lodolo with homers from TJ Friedl and Austin Hays, part of a 3-0 cushion that soon evaporated when Lodolo was replaced.
