A police officer in Dedza, identified as Mphatso Namwada, has died after being attacked by villagers in Chufikani during a rescue operation.

According to reports gathered by Times 360 Malawi, Namwada, together with three other officers, had gone to rescue Fanuel Chadaine, who had been abducted by a group of suspected criminals demanding K4.5 million ransom.

The officers managed to apprehend the suspects and free Chadaine. However, as they were leaving the scene, one suspect jumped off a motorcycle and attempted to flee. Namwada gave chase, but villagers intervened, turning on the officer and assaulting him.
