Lucy Powell has decided to run to be deputy leader of the Labour Party just days after being sacked from the cabinet by Keir Starmer .

HuffPost UK understands the Manchester Central MP will confirm she is a candidate on Tuesday.

It comes after education secretary Bridget Phillipson became the first minister to throw her hat into the ring.

Dame Emily Thornberry also announced that she wants the job, joining left-winger Bell Ribeiro-Addy, who was the first to declare on Monday night.

Powell is known to be “furious” that she was sacked as Commons leader in Starmer’s cabinet reshuffle last Friday.

Supporters have been urging her to go for the deputy leader’s post, which is vacant following Angela Rayner’s dramatic resignation from the government.
