Virginia Powerball players win big while $29.6 million heads to public schools
RICHMOND, VA – While Virginia players didn’t hit the record-breaking $1.787 billion Powerball jackpot on September 6, the Commonwealth still came out ahead, with millions in winnings and nearly $30 million in education funding.
During the 42-drawing jackpot run that began on May 31 and ended Saturday, Powerball ticket sales in Virginia generated an estimated $29.6 million in profit. By law, every dollar of that profit goes directly to support K-12 public education in the state.
In the final drawing of the run alone, more than 266,000 Powerball tickets purchased in Virginia won prizes. Among them were five tickets worth $100,000 each and four tickets worth $50,000 each.
The $100,000 winning tickets were sold
