Tuesday is election day in Boston , and voters will have the opportunity to narrow down the races for mayor and city council by casting their ballots citywide.

Since municipal races in Boston are nonpartisan, this is a preliminary election, not a primary. All candidates appear on the same ballot regardless of party affiliation.

Tuesday's election will narrow down Boston's mayoral race to the two top candidates, and narrow the race for at-large city council positions to the top eight candidates. District council races will be narrowed to the top two candidates.

The final say will happen at the general election in November.
