RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The city of Richmond officially approved a multi-million dollar restitution payment. Eight of the nine board members voted in favor on Monday night.

Kenya Gibson was the only no vote. The decision did not come without a serious discussion.

“I fully and vehemently support that this man get the restitution he so graciously deserves,” one resident said. “My problem is how we are funding this.”

Marvin Grimm, the man who spent more than four decades behind bars for a wrongful conviction, is receiving $5.8M from the city.

Council members all agree Grimm should receive the payment, but some of them are frustrated because they said they were not aware that kind of money existed in the city’s budget.
