The remains of a New Orleans soldier have been found and accounted for nearly 60 years after he was killed in Vietnam, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Friday .

U.S. Army Master Sgt. Donald P. Gervais' remains were found in Vietnam over the course of eight excavations that occurred in the A Shau Valley between 2018 and 2025. He was officially accounted for on May 16 and his family was notified, according to the Defense Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency.

Gervais was 24 years old when he was reported missing in action after his OH-6A Cayuse helicopter crashed during a reconnaissance mission over the A Shau Valley on May 1, 1968, according to the DPAA.
