Nina Dobrev is commenting on dating Ian Somerhalder .

The 36-year-old The Vampire Diaries actress, who plays Elena in the show, gave a rare quote about her 46-year-old co-star in a newly released book about the series, called I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries .

In the book, Nina reflected on early audition days, and the chemistry read she did with actor Rob Mayes for the part of Damon, whom she was actually dating at the time.

“There was a bunch of drama around that [audition] because I was dating Rob Mayes at the time, but they didn’t know that. We were trying to keep it really secret because we were afraid that if they found out, they wouldn’t cast one or both of us,” she admitted, per Us Weekly .
