United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has released the U.N.'s latest report on military spending, urging member states to recalibrate security and development priorities.
The U.N. report says that global military spending surged to a record $2.7 trillion in 2024, the equivalent of $334 for every person on Earth.
"That is really 13 times the amount of official development assistance from the world's wealthiest nations and 750 times the regular budget of the United Nations," Guterres said.
The secretary generals said that military spending has placed the Sustainable Development Goals in jeopardy. "Only one in five Sustainable Development Goals targets is on track. The financing gap is growing, and so is the cost of inactio,." Guterres said.
