N.C. A&T will host a memorial service for retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Joseph McNeil, Class of 1963, one of its legendary sons on Thursday in Harrison Auditorium.

Bishop William Barber will deliver the eulogy.

McNeil, who died last week at the age of 83, would be best known for the moment in history when he and his friends — the late Franklin McCain, the late David Richmond and Jibreel Khazan (formerly Ezell Blair Jr.) — sat down in protest at the segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter, a piece of which sits on display in the Smithsonian.

The Rev. Martin Luther King said it reinvigorated the Civil Rights Movement.

N.C. Gov. Josh Stein has ordered all U.S. and state flags lowered on Saturday in McNeil's honor during a final observance of his life in his native Wilmington.
