DES MOINES, Iowa —

Volunteers in Des Moines are honoring the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks by lining trails with 2,996 American flags, marking the 24th anniversary of the tragic event. The flags will line Fleur Drive at Gray's Lake, a tradition upheld annually.

This year, the event is hosted by iHeart Radio, the Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department, offering a volunteer opportunity for people of all ages to create the Tribute Trail.

The city notes that others at the lake often stop and join in the effort. Participants say the event serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, unity, and strength of the United States following the tragic events of 9/11, regardless of their location.
