Tropical Storm Kiko is passing north of the Hawaiian Islands today as it continues to weaken while bringing dangerous surf and strong rip currents along east-facing shores.

As of 5 a.m. today, Kiko was about 215 miles north-northeast of Hilo and 300 miles east-northeast of Honolulu, moving west-northwest at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center. The storm is expected to weaken further over the next two days and may become a post-tropical cyclone by late week.

A high surf warning remains in effect through 6 p.m. today for east-facing shores of the Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai, with breaking waves expected between 10 and 15 feet, according to the National Weather Service. Weather officials are warning beachgoers to s
