Shoppers at Woodfield Mall may have felt like they stepped back into the late ’90s on the weekend of Sept. 6-7. The Tamagotchi USA Road Trip rolled into town, and for two days the mall’s Grand Court turned into a playground for fans of the tiny, egg-shaped virtual pets.

The pop-up provided a totally immersive experience on both Saturday and Sunday,and drew steady crowds of parents, kids, and plenty of thirty-somethings who once clipped Tamagotchis to their backpacks. Oversized characters and bright displays marked the space, and a steady hum of excitement hung in the air. At the center of it all was a long line full of people swapping stories about their first digital pets.
