A Brockville steel pipe plant is seeing its business suffer, with layoffs happening in the wake of the imposition of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Douglas Barwick Inc., located on California Avenue, is trying to find a way to navigate through the muddy waters of the current political landscape, and has been forced to make tough decisions.

“I’ve been here for two and a half years, and there were about 60-70 people working here when I started, and now we’re at about 35,” said plant manager Tim Underhill. “We can’t go any lower than what we’re at; we’re actually below the core now. I could hire people, but there’s a fear that if I hire someone, they could just get laid off again in a few months.”
