YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) -- September is Suicide Prevention Month, and Wednesday is World Suicide Prevention Day. With LGBTQ+ people at high risk for suicide, it's an issue that disproportionately affects the community.

According to the Trevor Project, 39% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, including 46% of transgender and nonbinary people.

Katie Cortison, operations manager at Full Spectrum Community Outreach in Youngstown, said that is just what's reported.

"If someone is not open about that, if someone is hiding it from family, afraid of mentioning it, I think the numbers are actually much higher than what is reported," Cortison said.
