ST PAUL, Minn. — The melancholy that many Minnesotans feel when Labor Day signals summer's end can be tempered a bit by the prospect of a spectacular day spent looking at the reds, oranges and yellows that make up the colors of fall.

And this year, the news is extra good. DNR forestry experts and naturalists say this is shaping up to be a top-notch year for looking at leaves. DNR forestry consultant Brian Schwingle says the weather has been ideal, sharing a list of the things that have gone right:

All that said, it is still difficult to determine when certain areas of the state will reach their peak colors. Even experts like Schwingle struggle to pinpoint when leaf changes will occur.

“I honestly think predicting fall colors is more complex than rocket science… I do,” Schwingle stated.
