PORTLAND, Maine — In the coming weeks, the Portland Police Department plans to open a new community policing office in the heart of downtown.
The office, located at 443 Congress Street, is just steps from Monument Square, where business owners and residents have voiced concerns for months about drug use, littering, and disruptive behavior .
Business owner David Turin, who runs David’s Restaurant overlooking the square, said he has seen the area struggle.
“It was kind of turning into a little bit of a rough spot,” Turin said.
But recently, Turin says the atmosphere has improved.
“It’s about the best it’s been since before COVID,” he told NEWS CENTER Maine.
