NORFOLK, Va. — September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about hunger in America and inspire action.

According to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore , food insecurity is on the rise nationwide, with more than 47 million people struggling to access sufficient food. In our region, those rates range from 10% to 15.6%, and in some communities, as many as one in three children go to bed hungry.

The Foodbank stated that recent cuts to SNAP and Medicaid mean that even more neighbors will soon be forced to make difficult choices between food, healthcare, and other essentials. The Foodbank is calling on our neighbors to come together and take part in building a hunger-free future.
