Her words spoke what I was feeling, too, but hadn’t yet identified. I want to tell you what we discovered there at the courthouse in Porterville last Thursday.

My new friend is a young woman I thought I remembered from my job at RN Market more than 10 years ago, when she and her mother and sister would come through my check stand. We never knew each other’s names, but by some invisible logic we both had been summoned to serve that day. She had been selected as a potential juror, and when she said her name and occupation, I knew by her voice she was who I remembered as a teenager.
