BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) - After a new law was passed in 2024, Tennessee schools were required to provide firearm safety instruction to students starting in the 2025-2026 school year.

Sullivan County Schools has started implementing gun safety programs in schools.

Sullivan County Director of Schools Chuck Carter said as soon as the law was enacted, the school system started working on implementing safety programs into the curriculum.

Carter said the programs could save a life and that education in firearm safety is key.

"I think that only helps with that message going forward," said Carter. "Get it kind of ingrained in their mind to think, 'Oh, I better go tell an adult just to be on the safe side.'"
