LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A new proposal could require Louisville animal owners to get their pets microchipped.

The changes were proposed by councilmembers Donna Purvis and Andrew Owen.

The ordinance would require pet owners to microchip their dogs and cats by the time they are three months old.

Microchips are tiny devices placed under a pet’s skin to help clinics identify pets and contact their owners if they get lost.

“Microchipping is one of the most effective tools we have to reunite lost pets with their families,” Louisville Metro Animal Services Director Andy McClinton said in a press release. “Every day, we see the difference an up-to-date microchip makes.
