FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - New national testing data reveals a troubling trend: one-third of high school seniors across the country lack basic reading skills.
Sylvan Learning Center Director, Jill Johnston, says more families are reaching out after report cards and state testing show their children are falling behind.
“A lot of times students are just simply struggling, but the key is to figure out where that struggle is coming from.” Jill Johnston.
Johnston says while the academic side matters, the biggest barrier she sees isn’t always about skills.
“Obviously, the reading scores have dropped, so more and more students are looking for reading support. Our families tend to come to us because they’re concerned.” Jill Johnston.
