Lifeguards faced strong currents and heavy surf conditions Tuesday during a rescue of two people who were swept off the North Jetty in Oceanside by large waves.

The lifeguards, according to a news release by the Oceanside Fire Department, received reports of a person struggling in the water just after 10 a.m. and joined surfers who were trying to help.

The surfers gave way to first responders at the rescue site, adjacent to the jetty, where the rough conditions, officials said, increased the difficulty of the operation.

Lifeguards found two people in distress, one who “was in a near-drowning situation.” They rescued the victim, who was transported in stable condition to a nearby trauma center.

The second person suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
