Claims that a night curfew is looming for older drivers have been debunked by WA’s Department of Transport, which has confirmed the reports are not only false — but also an elaborate scam.

Reports that drivers aged over 60 would soon be banned from operating vehicles between 10pm and 5am have spread online in the past three days, reaching social media groups in Perth and interstate.

One Reddit user raised the alarm that search engines were promoting it as genuine news, while links attached to the articles directed users to scam sites selling fake weight loss treatments and miracle drugs.

“I know it’s a scam,” the user said. “What surprises me is Google news aggregator picked up on it. Usually they know better.”
